G'Day Nimrods!
I am Happy to say that I am kicking off yet another awesome weekend rocking out to awesome rock tunes! This time around I will shine the spotlight on a band whose Nimrod Street debut is long overdue!
Hailing from Millicent, South Australia, rocking sisters, Sarah and Jess Renehan, united forces with bassist Tom Schumacher and drummer Tony Long to form one of the best Independent Rock Bands I have ever heard. Calling Utopia, is setting up to kick their music careers into top gear as they prepare to blow the minds of rock fans all over the world. These awesome rockers have created a pure utopian experience that is sure to please the mases! "Drawing inspiration from artists the likes of Pink, Evanescence, Avril Lavigne, Jewel, Michelle Branch, Suzie Q and Paramore, Calling Utopia would describe their music as, honest, heartfelt, aggressive, catchy, and playful. A lot of the time the lyrics are written based on personal experience, but sometimes they just like to have fun and use their imaginations."
With debut album "XIII" (13) hot off the press, Calling Utopia's sound could easily convince first time listeners that the band are a quartet of seasoned rock gods! The powerful guitar riffs, awesome drum beats along with very beautifully executed bass lines all blend into pure audio bliss. With songs like "Runaway" and "I Can't Breathe" touching on topics such as the hardships of growing up, not only are the 13 tracks on "XIII" very well orchestrated, but the lyrics provided by the sibling front-women are extremely easy to relate to.
The personal nature that the music Calling Utopia delivers can be attributed to the sisters supplying lyrics to each song individually. Although they on occasion help with each others writing, as good sisters do, they shared the responsibility by each of them writing six out of the thirteen songs found on their album and collaborated together on "I Did It Again". "Ask the band what Calling Utopia stands for and they will tell you that it’s a reference to searching for the 'paradise that we all long for and hope to find through the creation and performance our music. We also hope that our fans will find their own Utopia when they listen to our music.' " However, while the girls provide lyrical bliss to the tracks, they aren't the only ones worthy of praise.
Tony, moved to Australia from England at a young age and grew up listening to music from well known rockers as The Clash, Sex Pistols and The Jam. He would later play in smaller local bands before joining Calling Utopia.
Tom joined up after having been in a previous band with Sarah and Jess. His influences include the Papa Roach, Stonesour, Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Metallica.
